The DGT Test in English

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) grants the driving license for Spain and the rest of Europe. The fact that more and more foreigners are living in Spain has allowed the DGT to open the option of taking the spanish driving test in English and in two other European languages: German and French. The DGT theoretical test can be done in Spanish and in six other languages: Catalan, Basque and Galician (official languages of our country according to the Constitution) and in English, French and German (official and majority languages of the European Union ).

However, there are logical restrictions to being able to take the driving test in English. Neither more nor less is it that the student must have foreign nationality, preferably from an Anglo-Saxon-speaking country.

This means that a Spanish citizen cannot take the spanish driving exam in English. This requirement is identical for the rest of the languages, including the languages spoken in Spain, being able to do it in any of the co-official languages in the communities where these languages are spoken.

DGT Theory test and practical driving test rules

Only three mistakes allowed

In any of the languages, the DGT exam only admits three failures, starting from number four you will have to repeat the test.

On the other hand, in the practical exam it can only be done in Spanish, so it is suggested to foreigners that, although their classes can be held in English, they practice with Spanish, or Basque, Catalan or Galician, to avoid surprises before the examiners.

It is important to focus on car mechanics, as the practical test may also include questions about the battery or changing lights, so English-speaking people may have problems.
